Frequently Asked Questions
250 million tons of waste every year goes to landfills nationwide and 40% of it is compostable! Composting is the most environmentally friendly method of disposing of food waste. Organic material that does end up in landfills breaks down, releasing methane. When you don't compost your food gets dumped in landfills, where it’s trapped by tons of garbage, which generate 20 percent of the nations’ emissions of greenhouse gases. Microorganisms break it down by anaerobic digestion, emitting methane and carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming.
Curbside composting is a way to recycle food scraps and compostable materials through a pickup service rather than at home.
Instead of throwing food scraps, paper products, and other compostable material into the trash, households use a CompostBoro bin with sealed lid. Each week, members put the bin in a convenient location for CompostBoro to change out bin for a clean one.
Now, CompostBoro makes composting easy by doing all of the dirty work for you! When you sign up for our service, we deliver a bin and exchange it for a clean one weekly. All you have to do is place your food scraps in the bin rather than your trash or garbage disposal, and we take care of the rest.
Here are some more great benefits:

Nope, just have your bin out by 5am and our Drivers will be by to collect your compostables.
We begin each route at 5 am and go as late as 5 pm. Please put the bin out the night before your collection day to make sure we get to it. Our routes vary due to weather conditions, route changes, or local events. The time we pick up your bin may vary as well. If you feel your bin may have been missed, please send us an email and we'll try to schedule a special pick up.
Too much compost is a great “problem” to have! If you are routinely exceeding 20 pounds of compostables per collection and/or are unable to fit a week's worth of material in one bin, it's time to upgrade your service to two bins a week. At any time, you can log into your account and upgrade to a two-bin system. This costs a mere $10 extra per month* and your additional bin will be delivered on your next collection day. Your second bin will be delivered on your next collection day. If you place a second container out for collection without upgrading your service, we will not be able to service the additional container. *Extra bin cost not subject to More the Merrier discount/rebate.
Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us. To avoid missing your collection day, it can be useful to place your bin out the night before so we have no chance of missing it. If you are new to the service, setting a weekly reminder on your phone can help!
Or
Send us an email about forgetting and save whatever overflow you have in a separate container and leave it out for next week’s collection (this extra container will not be cleaned).
It depends on whatever best suits your style! You can keep it indoors next to your kitchen trash and recycling, outdoors on your balcony or porch, or any other creative space you can dream up. To divert the maximum amount of materials possible, it is useful to have smaller containers in each room (one on your kitchen counter, one in the office, one in the bathroom, etc) for compost collection. These can be emptied into the main bin whenever they fill up.
Your bin must be placed in the designated location. Anywhere else on your property opens up the possibility to us not being able to find it.
Yes, absolutely! There is no shame in a small collection, and we certainly don't judge. Regardless of how much you were able to compost, it is important that we collect and clean the bin once a week. After a bin has been sitting uncollected for more than a week or two, it can cause odor or pest problems and makes your our job much more difficult.
Upon collection each week, we exchange your compost bin with a clean one. Many of our members have actually noticed a reduction in their waste-related smell issues because they are able to put all their organics in a sealed container. Remember, we’re not creating any new waste - we’re just moving all of the organics into a sealed container.
We love a notice of at least 7 days. It allows us to issue refunds without delay while making our routing and deliveries as humanly efficient as possible
Shoot us an email so we can let us know to skip you. If you’re gone for four weeks or more, we are happy to refund your 4 week interval of service.
It doesn’t. We do not offer refunds for skipped weeks. If you are going to be out of town for an extended period of time—a month or more—you can temporarily suspend your service, and we will suspend your automated payments until you return.
If your bin goes missing (due to theft, or bad luck, or whatever), let us know and we’ll do our best to replace it on your next scheduled pickup day. We’ll replace a bin once free of charge. Unfortunately, if it goes missing again, we’ll need to charge you $25 for each replacement bin. Thanks for understanding.
Please don’t leave! We hate to see a composter go, and if there’s anything we might have done differently to make you want to stick around, we hope you’ll give us the chance to make it right. But if you are determined to cancel, you can do so through the subscriber dashboard. Please note that we do not offer refunds for partial 4-week period of service and we cannot process your cancellation and close out your automated payments until we collect your bin.
Yes! You don’t need your landlord’s approval nor a yard to start diverting your organics from the landfill. We just need to make sure we can have access to your front door, whether using a gate code or FOB key.
We will always send you an email if your collection day has been moved due to a Holiday or due to any issues that have arisen. However, please note that the only day we observe is:
Christmas Day: December 25
Not at all! We offer the service on a 4-week interval basis. You are welcome to cancel at any time. We find that most of our members stick around as long as they keep on living inside our service area. However, please note that we do not offer refunds for partial 4-week periods of service and we cannot process your cancellation and close out your automated payments until we collect your bin.
So sorry. At this time, we are only servicing within Murfreesboro City limits. We’re working hard to bring CompostBoro to areas and towns everywhere in Rutherford County. In fact, we’re basing expansion plans largely on the demand we see, so please, even if you are outside of our service area, it is a good idea to go ahead & let us know where yo live via our email (and encourage your neighbor to do the same!). This automatically places you on a waiting list for your neighborhood, and we use these lists when deciding on our next expansion territory. .
Yes! After you've been a member for 6 months, you'll be eligible to receive high grade, food waste vermicompost that YOU helped to make absolutely FREE! You receive 5 lbs worm castings/vermicompost (natural fertilizer) for every 50 lbs of allowed food scraps.
Since not everyone wants their compost back, we'll send an email to let you know that vermicompost is available. All you have to do is email us back saying you'd like it and we'll deliver it on your next weekly pickup day or tell you’d like it donated. (nonprofit farms, community gardens, or school gardens) It's that easy!
Not at this time. Since we are working with worms, yard waste heats up when breaking down which would cook our workers (not a good thing).
No need for personal vermicompost? Then your share is donated to local nonprofit farms, community gardens, or school gardens.
At this time, are only servicing residential accounts.
